Amazon Buys the Emmys as a Global Storefront

Prime Video takes the Emmy Awards off ABC, CBS, Fox and NBC in 2027, keeping the show free while turning awards season into a year-round Prime catalog.

Prime Video will carry the Emmy Awards worldwide for six years, starting with the live September 2027 show. The Television Academy said on October 6, 2026, that the streamer is now the exclusive global home of the Emmy Awards, and that no Prime subscription will be required.

ABC, CBS, Fox and NBC had taken turns with the U.S. telecast for 31 years. That wheel ends after last month’s 78th Primetime Emmy Awards on NBC, which drew 6.7 million viewers across the network and Peacock.

Amazon Paid for a Year-Round Emmy Calendar

The live night is the headline. The contract is built around everything around that night. The joint statement says the pact “transforms the Emmys into a year-round cultural celebration,” with Prime Video using its apps and catalog so fans can find shows, clips and Academy events long before September.

Cris Abrego, chair of the Television Academy, said the old U.S. wheel, the FXX deal for the artisans nights, and the international syndication deals all expired together. “The wheel deal, the FXX deal and the international deals, all that has ended, and we put it all into one bundle, and it sits now within this deal at Prime,” he said.

Financial terms were not disclosed. Abrego called the check “a meaningful investment” and “definitely an increase” from the prior domestic rights fee, which people familiar with the wheel put at $8 million to $10 million a year for the United States only. International rights had sat with Rainmaker Content, except in Canada and Australia.

Mike Hopkins, head of Prime Video and Amazon MGM Studios, would not name a figure either. He called it “a fair deal” and said six years “felt for them and us like the right number of years to see if we can together make a meaningful impact,” with an expectation the pairing could run longer.

We’re at the Emmys, and we stand up and cheer when HBO Max wins and Apple TV wins because our customers have access to them, we’re partners.

Mike Hopkins, head of Prime Video and Amazon MGM Studios

That is the product. Prime Video Channels already sells HBO Max, Apple TV, Paramount+ and Peacock inside Amazon’s app. Hopkins described a night where a win can turn into a subscribe button, not a reason to change the channel.

The Academy wanted one partner that would still be there the next September. “The continuity is difficult when you’re starting new every year,” Abrego said. Under the wheel, even a strong show handed the next network a clean slate, new ads and a new production plan.

Why the Four-Network Wheel Stopped

The ceremony began in 1949. NBC took it national in 1955, and some form of broadcast rotation has been the U.S. default for most of the years since. The latest wheel, an eight-year pact struck in 2018, ran out with NBC’s show on September 14, 2026, hosted by Mariska Hargitay at the Peacock Theater.

Abrego said the Academy looked at keeping a rotation, even with new partners, and at a multi-network simulcast. The simulcast died in the logistics. At least one of the four networks stepped back. Netflix had studied the rights in recent years and did not close a deal that worked on paper.

HOW THE EMMYS LEFT BROADCAST

  1. 1949: The first Emmy Awards are held, years before a national TV pipeline exists.
  2. 1955: NBC becomes the first network to air the show nationwide.
  3. 1987: Fox buys exclusive rights, lets speeches run, and the telecast stretches to four hours, still the longest on record.
  4. 2002: HBO bids $10 million a year for an exclusive. The broadcast networks threaten a boycott, and the Academy keeps the wheel.
  5. 2018: ABC, CBS, Fox and NBC lock an eight-year U.S. rotation.
  6. September 14, 2026: The 78th Primetime Emmy Awards air on NBC and Peacock, the last show under that wheel.
  7. October 6, 2026: Prime Video and the Academy announce the six-year global deal.
  8. September 2027: The 79th Primetime Emmy Awards stream live on Prime Video.

Fox’s 1987 exclusive is the cautionary chapter Abrego still hears. Ratings fell on a young network with thinner reach. ABC later took the show alone, until rivals said they would not back an event that lived only on a competitor. The wheel was the peace treaty. It lasted 31 years this time, and it could not grow a show that had to be rebuilt every September.

A Free Ceremony in 240 Territories

The Academy’s non-negotiable was access. The show will sit in front of Prime Video’s paywall in the United States and in more than 240 countries and territories. “That was crucial to us, and again, to Mike and Amazon’s credit, it was something they understood right away,” Abrego said. “Exclusivity in the honors should never mean exclusivity in access.”

Amazon already sells live sports that way: a big game can be a shop window, not a gated extra. Hopkins has called Prime Video a hybrid of live and on-demand, with live treated as a real priority, almost a decade after the company first put an NFL game on the service.

The 2027 date stays in September. Abrego has said later years could move if both sides want that, with the obvious cost to nomination deadlines and voting. Hopkins, asked about a longer show now that Prime Video has no hard network clock, shut it down. “I think a three-hour award show is plenty,” he said. He pointed to the way Prime Video has restyled Thursday Night Football rather than stretching it.

WHAT WE KNOW

  • The window: Six years, beginning with the September 2027 ceremony, with Hopkins hoping the pairing outlasts the contract.
  • The paywall: None. The stream is free, with no Prime membership required.
  • The bundle: Abrego said the U.S. wheel, the FXX artisans nights and the old international deals now sit inside the Prime Video pact.
  • The extra shows: Hall of Fame and Television Academy Honors events are on the table as year-round Prime Video programming.

WHAT IS UNCONFIRMED

  • Ads: Neither side has said whether the stream will carry commercials, or who would sell them.
  • Artisans nights: Those formerly branded Creative Arts shows are in the bundle; the live-versus-edited format is still being worked out.
  • The calendar: September is locked for 2027 only. A later shift remains an option, not a plan.
  • Daytime: A merger with the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences is targeted for mid-2027. Daytime Emmys would need a separate fee talk.

Measurement is open too. Nielsen’s old live-plus-same-day number was built for broadcast. A free global stream will produce a different kind of count, and the Academy has not said which figure it will treat as the official audience.

The Night Still Belongs to Apple and Max

Amazon is hosting a party it does not currently win. Last month Apple TV’s Widow’s Bay took 14 Emmys, a single-year record for a comedy, including six on the main telecast for series, writing, directing and acting. Apple TV led all outlets with 28 awards. HBO Max’s The Pitt won Outstanding Drama Series for a second straight year.

Prime Video and Amazon MGM Studios collected 17 Emmy Awards across six titles, with Spider-Noir accounting for five of them. That is a solid night for a studio. It is not the night’s center of gravity.

WHO TOOK THE 2026 HARDWARE

  • Widow’s Bay: Apple TV comedy, 14 Emmys in one year, six of them on the main show, including series, writing, directing, and acting for Matthew Rhys, Kate O’Flynn and Stephen Root.
  • Apple TV overall: 28 awards, first among networks and streamers.
  • The Pitt: HBO Max drama, Outstanding Drama Series for the second year running.
  • Amazon MGM and Prime Video: 17 awards across six titles, led by Spider-Noir.

The same split is why the broadcast networks had grown tired of the wheel. They were paying to produce a three-hour ad for streamers that spend more on the kind of series Emmy voters like. A person close to those talks put it in those terms in September, when Amazon’s bid first leaked: the Big Four were underwriting a commercial for Netflix, HBO Max and Apple TV.

Hopkins is not pretending Prime Video will start sweeping series prizes. He said he wants Netflix’s biggest stars on the stage, and Disney’s, and everyone else’s. Widow’s Bay and last year’s comedy winner The Studio already sit on Prime Video through its Apple TV partnership. The host can sell the winner without owning the winner.

Monday Night Football and the Ratings Trap

The audience problem is not a secret, and moving the pipe does not erase it. The 2026 telecast drew 6.7 million viewers on NBC and Peacock, down from 7.42 million for the 2025 show on CBS. It ran on a Monday against the season’s first Monday Night Football game, Kansas City’s 31-10 win over Denver.

Amazon’s own live stack shows the scale of that collision. Figures the company has cited for its first NBA season include a peak of 6.5 million viewers for Game 7 of the Eastern Conference semifinals, roughly the size of an Emmys night. Football is another order of magnitude.

EMMYS VIEWERS IN RECENT YEARS

Ceremony Home Viewers
2026 (78th) NBC and Peacock 6.7 million
2025 (77th) CBS 7.42 million
2024 ABC 6.87 million
January 2024 (delayed) Fox 4.4 million
2022 NBC 5.92 million
2018 Broadcast wheel 10.2 million
2000 Broadcast 22 million

The 2018 show was the last to clear 10 million. The 2000 night, at 22 million, is the peak still cited when people talk about what the Emmys used to be. The January 2024 Fox telecast, delayed by the writers’ and actors’ strikes and stuck against NFL playoff football, is the floor at 4.4 million.

NBC could still claim a few consolation numbers. Combined with Peacock, the 2026 audience was up from the 5.92 million who watched NBC’s 2022 Emmys. Linear viewing was up 41 percent from that strike-delayed Fox Monday. That does not change the long slope, or the fact that a free Prime Video stream will be judged against football, clips on phones, and the Oscars, not against Fox in January 2024.

YouTube Gets the Oscars in 2029

The film academy moved first on paper and second on the calendar. On December 17, 2025, it gave YouTube exclusive global rights to the Oscars from the 101st ceremony in 2029 through 2033. Disney’s ABC keeps the show through the 100th Oscars in 2028.

That pact is also free at the point of viewing, aimed at more than 2 billion YouTube users, with YouTube TV as the U.S. pay-TV path. It folds in red carpet coverage, the Governors Awards, nominations, the nominees luncheon, student and scientific awards, and a plan for Google Arts & Culture to help digitize pieces of the Academy Collection, which holds more than 52 million items.

Two Emmy nights on Prime Video will already have happened before the Oscars leave ABC. The Emmys become the first of the four EGOT shows to live only on a streamer. Grammys and Tonys have not followed.

The two deals rhyme and do not match. YouTube is an ad-supported giant with no competing studio slate. Prime Video is a studio, a sports broadcaster and a store that already sells the other streamers. Google bought a global film channel. Amazon bought a TV discovery layer that can route a winner into a subscription it already bills.

What Prime Video Wants From Six Years

Hopkins has been blunt about the job. He wants to grow the audience over time and pull it younger, using nominee promotion across the year as the hook: watch the shows, then watch the show. Abrego said that pitch, and Prime Video’s habit of carrying other companies’ series, is a large reason the Academy said yes. “They really support all television,” he said. “We want reach, we want access, and we felt Amazon was in line with that.”

He does not expect Netflix or Disney to skip the night because Amazon owns the pipe. “I don’t think they will,” he said. “All the industry are partners.” The 2002 HBO scare is the ghost in that sentence. This time the host already resells those partners’ apps.

A merger with NATAS, if it lands by mid-2027, could put Daytime Emmys into the same conversation, though Hopkins said that talk is premature. For now the work is the 79th Primetime show: one production team, one global feed, one marketing plan that does not reset when the calendar flips.

The ceremony that honors television will no longer live on the four broadcast networks that defined U.S. TV for the people who still use that phrase. It will live on a storefront that already sells the winners, the losers and the football game that has been beating it. The 79th Primetime Emmy Awards are set for September 2027 on Prime Video, live and free, with no subscription required.
