Disclaimer
Everything on this site is journalism, written for a general audience. This page sets out what that means and what it does not mean, mostly so nobody makes an expensive decision on the strength of a news story.
The short version: we report in good faith, we check what we publish, and we are not your adviser.
News reporting is not professional advice
Our Business and Tech coverage handles filings, results, funding rounds, product launches and regulatory decisions. Our Science coverage handles papers, trials and public health rulings. None of it is financial, legal, medical, tax or any other kind of professional advice, and none of it takes your circumstances into account, because we have no idea what they are.
A story explaining why a share price moved is not a recommendation to buy or sell. A piece about a court ruling is not guidance on your own case. A report on a study is not a reason to change a medication. Before acting in any of those areas, speak to somebody qualified who can look at your position and be accountable for what they tell you.
Accurate on the day, not accurate forever
We publish what the record supports at the time of writing, and the checks that happen before that are set out on our fact-checking page. Things move afterwards. A charge is dropped, a figure is revised by the body that issued it, a company restates its accounts, a recall widens.
Every story carries a publication date and we expect readers to use it. Where a piece has been updated, the update and its date sit on the story. We make no warranty that an article is complete, current or fit for a particular purpose. An old story is a record of what was known then rather than a description of the world now.
The label at the top of a story matters
A news story says what happened and attributes each claim to the document or the person it came from. Analysis is a writer reading the evidence and drawing conclusions from it, and admits that at the top. Opinion is a named writer’s argument, rare here, and labelled where it appears. Sponsored material is paid for and marked sponsored above the headline.
Views in analysis and opinion belong to the writer rather than to the site, and certainly not to anyone who advertises with us. Our editorial standards page explains how the labels get applied and who signs them off. If a piece looks mislabelled to you that is a fair complaint, and it goes to an editor who had nothing to do with commissioning it.
Links to other people’s pages
We link out heavily on purpose. A claim about a filing should arrive with the filing attached, and a reader who wants to check us should not have to go hunting for the document.
A link is not an endorsement of the site holding it, its owners, its accuracy or anything else it publishes. Those pages are not ours to control, they change without telling us, and a URL that was right at publication can end up somewhere unrecognisable. Where a linked document has moved, tell us and we will point at the archived copy instead.
Advertising and affiliate links
Advertising pays for this site and it is always identifiable as advertising. Display slots are marked. Sponsored articles carry a label above the headline, look different from our journalism and never carry a journalist’s byline. No advertiser has any say over editorial content, and buying space here buys space. The rules, including the categories we turn away, are on our advertising page.
Some Lifestyle, Auto and Gaming pieces contain affiliate links that earn us a commission if you buy something. Those are disclosed in the piece, the recommendation is settled before the links go in, and the commission does not move the verdict. It does mean we have a financial interest in the click, and you are entitled to weigh that.
Quotes, images and embedded material
Third-party material appears here under licence, with permission, or as fair quotation for the purposes of reporting and criticism, and it is attributed to whoever owns it. Photographs are credited, and where an image is a handout or a screenshot the caption says so.
We do not publish AI-generated images of real events. If you own something you think we have used without the right to use it, our copyright policy explains how to tell us, and we would much rather have that email than a letter from a solicitor.
Errors, and what we are not liable for
If you spot a mistake, write to support@blueholemen.com with the link and the sentence you are challenging. Our corrections policy explains what earns a note on the story and how quickly it happens. Errors get fixed in public with a date attached, not quietly.
To the extent the law allows, we are not liable for loss arising from anything published here or from a decision taken in reliance on it, including a decision taken on something we later corrected. That limit sits alongside the fuller wording on our terms of service page. Questions about this page go to the same inbox, read by editors rather than a support desk, at support@blueholemen.com.
