Honor Magic 9 Splits Cinema Cameras From Battery Life
Honor is splitting Magic 9 into ARRI cinema phones with a 55MP square selfie and a battery-first Super Edition before September 28.
Honor has confirmed a 55MP square selfie camera for the Magic 9 and Magic 9 Pro Max, with a China launch set for September 28. The same teasers lock in dual 200MP rear cameras built with ARRI and a clip-on 500mm extender.
A third model, the Magic 9 Super Edition, is already on China pre-order lists. Weibo leaks still attach the 11,000mAh cell and the cooling fan to that name, and they also strip the ARRI badge off it.
Three Magic 9 Phones, Two Different Jobs
Honor’s own footnotes put the square Agile Eye front camera on the base Magic 9 and the Magic 9 Pro Max only. Listings that appeared on September 14 add a Super Edition with its own colors and storage steps, so the family is no longer a simple Pro ladder. One side is a cinema kit. The other is an endurance phone wearing the Magic 9 camera island.
Chief executive Li Jian set the date during the Robot Phone event, and Honor opened blind pre-orders the same day across Honor Mall, authorized stores, and major e-commerce channels. Guan Haitao, Honor’s global chief marketing officer, later marked shortage and price-hike chatter as fake news on Weibo, but the company has still not posted RMB figures.
THE MAGIC 9 LINEUP ON PAPER
| Model | Display | Chip (listings) | Battery | Imaging |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Magic 9 | 6.37-inch 1.5K | Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 | 8,000mAh (leak) | Agile Eye 55MP; dual 200MP with ARRI; 50MP ultrawide |
| Magic 9 Pro Max | 6.8-inch OLED, 0.98mm bezels | Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 Pro | 8,800mAh (leak) | Agile Eye 55MP; dual 200MP with ARRI; 50MP ultrawide |
| Magic 9 Super Edition | 6.8-inch 165Hz (leak) | Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 | 11,000mAh (leak) | No ARRI badge; fan and fiberglass body in leaks |
Storage options listed for Magic 9 and Pro Max run 12GB+256GB, 12GB+512GB, 16GB+512GB, and 16GB+1TB. The Super Edition lists stop at 16GB+512GB. Pro Max colors are Moss Green, Silver, and Shadow Black. Magic 9 and Super Edition share Yellow Rice, Olive Green, Morning White, and Curtain Black.
Why Honor Put a Square Sensor on the Front
Agile Eye uses a 1:1 sensor instead of the usual tall rectangle behind a pill cutout. Honor’s teaser shows the same wide frame feeding a vertical shot or a horizontal shot without turning the phone. Software crops the square into whatever the app wants.
That is a creator problem, not a megapixel race. Short-form apps want 9:16. YouTube and cinema still want landscape. A square capture is a buffer that can be sliced either way, which is why Honor dropped an earlier prototype rumor of a 100MP front unit and shipped the 55MP square instead. Pixel count after a crop still has to hold up, and 55MP is the number Honor chose to live with.
The square unit is missing from the Super Edition leaks, which also talk about a single front camera. If that holds on stage, the format trick is reserved for the two ARRI phones. Oppo had been testing a square front camera as well; Honor is now the one claiming the first Android ship.
On the face of the Pro Max, the selfie camera still sits in a pill cutout next to a 3D time-of-flight sensor, so the square is in the silicon, not in a square hole in the glass. Biometrics on that model pair 3D face unlock with an ultrasonic fingerprint reader, a setup Honor already used on Magic 8 Pro.
ARRI Color Science Leaves the Robot Phone
The rear module is the other half of the pitch. Honor shaped it after an ARRIFLEX 35, with a large rectangular island, three cutouts, and the ARRI logo beside the telephoto and the flash. Official teasers put a 200MP 1/1.28-inch main camera at f/1.57 next to a 200MP 1/1.4-inch telephoto at f/2.6. The base Magic 9’s periscope is listed at 1/1.56-inch, a smaller tele chip than the Pro Max.
This is not Honor’s first ARRI phone. The companies announced a cinematic imaging partnership in March, and on August 12 they shipped the Robot Phone in China with the co-engineered with ARRI designation. That handset records 10-bit ARRI LogC3, uses ARRI Wide Gamut 3, and offers ARRI Looks. Magic 9 is how that stack leaves the gimbal oddity and sits on a normal flagship.
The HONOR Robot Phone is an important milestone in ARRI’s expansion into Content Creation. Together with HONOR, we are translating ARRI’s perspective on image quality, color, and visual storytelling into a new category. This gives more creators access to greater creative control and a stronger connection between capture and postproduction.
David Bermbach, Chief Product Officer, ARRI press release
ARRI, founded in 1917, has 20 Scientific and Technical Awards from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and six Engineering Emmys. Log C is the company’s cine encoding: a flat, desaturated file that holds highlight and shadow room for a grade, sitting in a Log C wide gamut color space. Honor says Magic 9 will support LogC3, AWG3, and in-phone ARRI Look styles, so a user can either grade later or bake a look in.
WHAT MAGIC 9 INHERITS FROM THE ROBOT PHONE
- LogC3 capture: A log gamma curve meant to keep highlights from clipping and shadows from crushing before a grade.
- ARRI Wide Gamut 3: The companion color space ARRI pairs with Log C on its cinema cameras.
- ARRI Looks: Preset styles from ARRI’s Look Library, applied on the phone instead of in a finishing suite.
- Cinema Mode: Manual ISO, shutter, and white balance, with local tone mapping turned off so the file stays closer to what the sensor saw.
Honor UK put the Pro Max in Moss Green at the Venice International Film Festival and called the island a pocket version of classic cinema hardware. The design still draws iPhone-clone jokes around the flat slab and the island. Those jokes miss the actual fight Honor picked: color science and clip-on glass, not another abstract camera bump.

The Super Edition Drops the Cinema Badge
Tipster Smart Pikachu and other Weibo accounts describe the Super Edition as a 6.8-inch 165Hz phone on Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5, with a built-in cooling fan, a fiberglass body, and an 11,000mAh cell. They also say the rear cameras will not carry ARRI branding. That is the split in one line. The cinema tools stay on Magic 9 and Pro Max. The fan and the huge cell stay on a sibling that gives those tools up.
Honor has not read those battery and fan claims on stage. It has listed the Super Edition name, its four colors, and three storage steps for pre-order, which is more than a rumor screenshot. Rear megapixel counts for that model still conflict across leaks, so they are not worth repeating until Honor shows the glass.
Putting last year’s flagship chip in the battery phone is the other tell. Listings point to Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 Pro on the Pro Max and the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 platform on both the compact Magic 9 and the Super Edition. Qualcomm rates that Gen 5 Oryon design as a high-clock, high-heat part. A fan is how Honor already kept it alive in a gaming phone. Dual 200MP capture, LogC3 encode, and a 165Hz panel do not magically run cool on the same board as an 11,000mAh pack, so Honor is not trying to make them.
A 500mm Clip-On and an 88g Thumb Lens
Honor’s Photography Master Kit is official even if the Super Edition cell is not. The headline piece is a 500mm Honor telephoto extender, a clip-on tube the company is pitching for stages and far subjects. The daily piece is a 200mm Honor thumb extender, about 81mm long and 88g, small enough to sit in a pocket with the phone.
Both add glass in front of the built-in periscope rather than replacing it. vivo already sells a 400mm clip-on on the X300 Ultra, and Oppo has a 300mm tube. Honor is stretching the same accessory war by 100mm on the long end. A 500mm stack will be long, heavy, and useless up close; the 88g thumb lens is the one most owners will actually carry.
THE PHOTOGRAPHY MASTER KIT
- 500mm extender: New with Magic 9, aimed at distant subjects that a crop from the 200MP telephoto still cannot reach cleanly.
- 200mm thumb extender: 81mm long, 88g, built as the portable companion rather than a studio cannon.
- Who it fits: Honor is selling the kit around the ARRI dual-200MP phones, not around the Super Edition leaks.
Main and telephoto sensors at 200MP give the crop math room after those tubes. The Magic 8 Pro already used a 200MP 1/1.4-inch telephoto at f/2.6 for 3.7x optical zoom, with a 50MP 1/1.3-inch main at f/1.6. Magic 9 moves the main camera to 200MP as well, so the wide shot finally matches the telephoto in resolution even before a clip-on goes on.
Honor Already Built a 10,000mAh Fan Phone
The 11,000mAh leak sounds like a stunt until you look at Honor’s last year. Magic 8 Pro ships with a 7,100mAh silicon-carbon battery at 15% silicon, plus 100W wired and 80W wireless charging. In December, Honor’s Win and Win RT gaming phones landed in China with 10,000mAh silicon-carbon cells, 185Hz 6.83-inch panels, Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5, and a fan Honor rated to 25,000 RPM.
Silicon-carbon chemistry is how those packs fit in a phone-shaped shell. The Super Edition leak is that Win formula moved onto a Magic body: a 6.8-inch 165Hz panel, the same Gen 5 chip, a fan, fiberglass instead of the Pro Max metal unibody, and another 1,000mAh on top of Win. From Magic 8 Pro’s 7,100mAh, the leaked Magic 9 cell is 900mAh more, the Pro Max 1,700mAh more, and the Super Edition 3,900mAh more.
HONOR PACK SIZES IN THIS CYCLE
- Magic 8 Pro: 7,100mAh silicon-carbon, 15% silicon, 100W wired, 80W wireless.
- Win / Win RT: 10,000mAh silicon-carbon, active fan, 185Hz, Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5.
- Magic 9 (leak): 8,000mAh on the compact 6.37-inch body.
- Pro Max / Super Edition (leaks): 8,800mAh on the cinema phone, 11,000mAh on the fan phone.
China’s camera flagships from Oppo and vivo are stacking 200MP glass in the same weeks. Honor’s differentiator is not another 200MP badge. It is ARRI’s log workflow on two phones, and a third phone that treats heat and charge as the feature.
What Honor Will Confirm on September 28
The Beijing event has to turn leaks into SKUs. Honor has already named Xiao Zhan as Flagship Smartphone Global Ambassador for Magic 9 Pro Max, which tells you which model the company wants on posters. The Super Edition is the one people will ask about in the hall if the 11,000mAh figure is real.
