The IBC Intercom Purchase Now Includes Licenses and Carriers

Clear-Com will sell EHX v15 and FreeSpeak Cell at IBC 2026 as extra intercom capacity without a new matrix frame. The four-day show runs 11 to 14 September at RAI Amsterdam, and the company will be on Stand 10.D29 with TSL arguing the same ops problem from the control room.

The booth line is more features in software. The bill that follows is license tickets, a long upgrade path, and, for cellular packs, a carrier the broadcaster does not own.

A Software Drop Lands at Stand 10.D29

Dave MacKinnon, vice president of product management at Clear-Com, said broadcast teams now work in plants, at live events, and across split sites, and that IBC 2026 is where the company will show kit that can move with those jobs. The stand mix is the tell. Visitors will see the FreeSpeak Icon beltpack, a 4-channel HelixNet beltpack, and the virtual trio of Gen-IC, Agent-IC and Station-IC next to Eclipse HX running EHX v15.

Arcadia Central Station picks up native IFB support and AES67-enabled user panels, which matters in rooms where comms already share audio-over-IP segments with the rest of the plant. Avalon, announced on 15 June 2026, is the 1RU IP station for that same world. It hosts FreeSpeak wireless, HelixNet partyline and V-Series keypanels. MacKinnon has described Avalon as Arcadia without the front panel and analog I/O, a cut that lowers the price if the plant no longer wants those connectors.

InfoComm 2026 already previewed the other half of that story. Clear-Com said it is building a new product on Arcadia after the end of life of the HelixNet Mainstation. A software-first pitch at IBC is easier to hear once a mainstation is leaving the price list and the replacement lives in licenses and IP ports.

What EHX v15 Changes on the Eclipse Floor

EHX v15, shown with Eclipse HX at NAB 2026 from 15 April 2026, adds ARC so users can log in by identity, float or fix ports, and keep one role across panels, beltpacks and virtual clients. Clear-Com said the same release lifts wireless density to 424 registered beltpacks, with 255 online at once.

The company’s EHX datasheet calls ARC a proprietary layer that splits configuration from hardware. Access is identity-based credentials for stations and connections. Resource is fixed or floating ports. Configuration is roles, so a user can walk from a keypanel to a beltpack to a desktop client and keep the same talk map.

That is the “no new frame” offer. It is also a new class of day-two work. A plant that used to budget a hardware refresh now has to budget a version lab, a rollback plan, and a change window that does not collide with a live show.

Licensed Ports Stay Glued to the E-IPA Card

The IP card that feeds this model, the E-IPA-HX, is sold as a license host, not as a simple port count. Feature rights for AES67 and ST 2110, and for SIP clients, stack on top of those ports. Recovery runs through Clear-Com support. The ticket is perpetual, which sounds like a one-time buy until a plant tries to move the right to another card.

THE E-IPA LICENSE STACK

• Port steps: Cards ship with 16 to 64 licensed ports, in 16-port jumps, with a field upgrade SKU of E-IPA-UG16-HX.
• AoIP add-ons: Separate tickets open 8, 16, 32, 48 or 64 of those ports for third-party AES67 and ST 2110.
• SIP add-on: An eight-port SIP client license bridges the matrix to a phone system.
• Glue: Delivery is a license ticket; the host is the E-IPA; the right is not transferable and stays fixed to that card.

Bid tabs that only list frames and beltpacks will miss this. A software-defined feature can sit behind a ticket that cannot move with a spare card in the flypack, which is a different risk from a dead PSU.

Clear-Com’s own support note is blunt about versions. Firmware and software upgrades are free while the major version number does not change. A jump to a new major version is billed. The company says it supports releases that are three versions back from current, or no more than three years old. EHX v15 is a major-version event for anyone still on older Eclipse software, and the support clock starts on that number, not on the date the frame was bolted in.

The Carrier Joins the Intercom Runbook

FreeSpeak Cell, launched on 17 April 2026 at NAB, is the other half of the IBC bag. After a North America start, Clear-Com says the pack is now on sale in EMEA. It is a beltpack that uses public and private LTE and 5G networks instead of a local DECT or UHF antenna grid. President Bob Boster put the bet in carrier language.

The press note is specific. The system supports CBRS private LTE on Band 48 in the United States, dual SIM with a physical SIM and an eSIM, and radios from 700 to 900 MHz and 1700 to 4200 MHz. Clear-Com said it is built for 100 or more packs and can scale to hundreds if the network holds. At launch it talked to Eclipse HX only, with Arcadia promised a few months later and Gen-IC later in 2026.

Traditional RF planning asks how many packs a local antenna network can hold. Cellular intercom asks how many users a public or private cell network will carry when the bowl is full, which is a different document set: coverage maps, SIM stock, roaming rules, and a fallback when the carrier slows down.

FREESPEAK CELL, NAB TO IBC

1. 17 April 2026: Clear-Com unveils FreeSpeak Cell on day one of NAB 2026, with U.S. shipping set for spring and more regional certificates later in the year.
2. 2 June 2026: The company’s account says the pack has released to ship, after factory posts of units in build and test.
3. 24 June 2026: RTL Deutschland runs a live test at the Nürburgring on private and public 5G, with Deutsche Telekom on the network.
4. 11 to 14 September 2026: FreeSpeak Cell heads to IBC on Stand 10.D29 as an EMEA product, not a prototype.

The Nürburgring proof of concept is the cleanest public case so far. Clear-Com said RTL kept comms up across almost the whole Grand Prix circuit, the paddock, and extra areas including Hatzenbach, without a thick DECT antenna plan. Jens Schilder, a project engineer at RTL Deutschland, tied that to remote production, not to a nicer beltpack.

The successful test at the Nürburgring proves that integrating intercom solutions into 5G infrastructures efficiently bridges the last mile of wireless communication. Cabling gets simpler. The dependency map does not. A SIM in a beltpack is now a production-critical vendor relationship, and a rain delay that congests the public cell is an intercom fault even if every Clear-Com box is healthy.

TSL Sells Visibility After the IP Cutover

TSL is walking the same floor with a different object. The Marlow company said IBC 2026 is where it will show Dante router control for the first time inside Hummingbird, next to NMOS and wider hooks for NDI and mixed SDI and ST 2110 plants. That is the hidden cost center after an IP cutover: hundreds of endpoints, streams and profiles that have to stay readable for the person on the desk and the engineer on call.

Hummingbird, which TSL built from TallyMan and DNF Controls, is the product it now uses to control and monitor SDI, ST 2110 and NDI in one place, on COTS servers, in the cloud, or on TSL hardware. IBC 2026 is also the first big European shop window after TSL bought JL Cooper Electronics, a move that adds more human-machine panels to that stack. Matthew Quade, TSL’s chief executive, has been selling freedom of mix, not a new router.

Show notes for Amsterdam also list tighter Hummingbird support for NDI, Amagi Tally, TSL v5 Server and VDCP-IP, plus a new app aimed at virtualizing and automating large workflows. That is not a camera or a mixer. It is the layer that decides whether a software drop in the comms rack is a quiet night or a crashed output.

A 266-Page Guide Comes With the Upgrade

Clear-Com’s Eclipse HX Upgrade Guide for v15.0, PUB-00370 Rev A, is dated 1 June 2026 and runs 266 pages. It covers HX-Delta, HX-Median and HX-Omega frames, and it walks plants from ECS v5.2.5 or EHX v7 through v14 up to v15.0. Client and server jobs must use the v15 server installer so IIS is rewritten for the new release. The guide says firmware has to move to the latest files as part of the same job.

That document is the opposite of a booth demo. A software-first capability drop still means USB driver kits, card code, panel code, FreeSpeak beltpack and transceiver code, and, in this revision, FreeSpeak Cell beltpacks as their own upgrade path. Mixed estates raise the cost. Icon packs, HelixNet beltpacks, Agent-IC phones and Station-IC desktops all have to land on a matrix version that ARC expects, or the role files lie.

The 1RU consolidation story has the same shape. Avalon can shrink a flypack by folding FreeSpeak, HelixNet and V-Series into one IP station. The configuration surface grows unless the plant freezes a standard map and treats every software drop like a live event, with a rehearsal, a rollback image, and a named owner for the change window.

RFPs That Ask About Rollback, Not Just Ports

By the time buyers leave Amsterdam, the useful questions will not be “how many keys on the panel.” They will be contract questions that used to live in IT and in the carrier office, not on a baseband bid tab.

WHAT 2027 SPECS SHOULD NAME

• EHX v15 and ARC: Which Eclipse HX features arrive only after the v15 load, and what the plant will do if the load fails mid-season.
• License glue: Which rights die with a failed E-IPA card, and how long Clear-Com takes to recover a ticket.
• Support clock: Whether the quote includes the next major version, or only minor builds inside the current number, against the three-version or three-year window.
• Cellular runbook: Coverage assumptions, dual-SIM policy, private versus public 5G, and the fallback when the carrier drops during a high-density show.
• Control and alarms: Who sees status across SDI, ST 2110, NDI and Dante, and how those alarms reach the person who can roll back a change.

Clear-Com will be on Stand 10.D29 with a software load, a 1RU IP station, and a beltpack that talks to a cell network. TSL will be selling the screen that makes that plant readable. The frame on the floor is optional. The license ticket, the upgrade guide, and the SIM in the pack are the items that will still be on the job after the hall lights come back on.
